Birdseye maple products

What is birdseye maple?

Birdseye maple refers to a flaw in the wood that gives it a distinctive beauty. The cause of it is unknown. As explained in the Textbook of Wood Technology, the phenomenon consists of pit marks in the wood: small, conical depressions or elevations that resemble the eyes of birds, whence "birdseye".

These distortions protrude from the inner part of the bark toward the pith of the tree. Once present in a growing maple, they continue to develop with each succeeding growth ring throughout the life of the tree.

Birds’ eyes may be found in the entire bole as well as the branches, or just along one side of the tree, or in irregular patches amid unaffected areas.

This wood's esthetic and physical properties make it an expensive and much sought-after product in many areas of hardwood production.
